What your phone does abroad depends entirely on which plan you're on. Read this before you travel rather than after you land.
Canada and Mexico
Some plans include roaming in Canada and Mexico. Your phone connects to a local network there and your plan covers it.
Everywhere else
There's no roaming outside Canada and Mexico on any Flex Mobile plan today. Flex Mobile is developing Travel Passes for other countries, but they aren't available yet.
What still works anywhere in the world
Wifi. Connect to a hotel, cafe or airport network and your messaging apps, email and video calls work as normal. Wifi calling lets you place and receive regular calls over that connection too, so people can still reach you on your usual number.
Before you fly
- Check which plan you're on and whether your destination is covered.
- Turn on wifi calling before you leave, while you still have your normal service, so it's already configured.
- Turn off mobile data roaming in your phone settings if your plan doesn't include roaming. This prevents your phone attempting to connect to a foreign network.
- Download maps, boarding passes and anything else you'll need offline.
If you need mobile data abroad
On a phone that supports eSIM, a travel eSIM from a third party provider can be installed alongside your Flex Mobile line. Set it as your data line while you're away and switch back afterward. Your Flex Mobile number stays on the phone throughout.
One thing to be careful about
Your plan is intended for personal use inside the United States unless it explicitly includes roaming. Extended use abroad isn't what these plans are for.
If you're not sure before you travel
Contact Flex Mobile support before you fly rather than after you land. Sorting this out from abroad, with no mobile service, is a great deal harder.
