Spam callers change numbers constantly, so blocking them one by one doesn't work. These settings cut the volume down properly.
Silence unknown callers
This sends every caller who isn't in your contacts straight to voicemail, without ringing. It's the single most effective setting available, and it does mean you'll miss legitimate calls from numbers you don't have saved.
- On iPhone, open Settings, tap Apps, then Phone, then Silence Unknown Callers, and turn it on.
- On Android, open the Phone app, tap the menu, then Settings, then Blocked numbers or Caller ID & spam, and turn on the option to filter or block unknown callers.
Turn on spam filtering
Android phones using Google's Phone app can flag suspected spam automatically. Open the Phone app, tap the three dots in the top right, tap Settings, tap Caller ID & spam, then turn on See caller and spam ID.
Register on the Do Not Call list
Add your number free at donotcall.gov. It won't stop illegal callers, but it does stop legitimate telemarketers.
Report the worst of it
Persistent scam calls can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Reports feed enforcement against the operations behind them.
What not to do
Don't answer and don't press any key to be removed from a list. Both confirm your number is live and reaching a real person, which usually increases the calls.
About caller ID
The number shown on an incoming call can be faked, including numbers that look local or match your own area code. Treat a familiar looking number as no guarantee of who's calling.
If it turns into harassment
Persistent scam or threatening calls can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Tell Flex Mobile support as well, so it's on record against your line.
