Your phone chooses between 5G and 4G LTE automatically based on what's available and what you're doing. You can influence that choice, and sometimes it's worth it.
Why your phone switches
5G is faster but its coverage isn't as wide as LTE yet, and it uses more battery. Your phone moves between the two as you move around. Seeing the indicator change through the day is normal.
If you're stuck on 4G and expected 5G
- Check 5G is available where you are by entering your zip code on the Flex Mobile coverage page.
- Confirm your phone supports 5G. Older phones don't, whatever the plan.
- Open your mobile network settings and check 5G is allowed rather than the phone being set to LTE only.
- Restart the phone. Your status bar shows 5G where it's available.
Where to change it, iPhone
Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data Options, then Voice & Data. 5G Auto uses 5G only when it won't drain the battery unnecessarily. 5G On uses it whenever available. LTE turns 5G off.
Where to change it, Android
On a Samsung: open Settings, tap Connections, tap Mobile networks, tap Network mode, then choose the option that includes 5G. On a Pixel: open Settings, tap Network & internet, tap SIMs, tap your Flex Mobile line, tap Preferred network type, then choose 5G. Choosing LTE instead keeps the phone off 5G.
When forcing LTE is the better choice
At the edge of 5G coverage a phone can flip repeatedly between the two, which drains battery and can interrupt connections. Setting it to LTE for a while gives you a steadier connection. Set it back afterward.
What this doesn't change
Switching between 4G and 5G doesn't affect your data allowance or your bill. 5G is included on every Flex Mobile plan at no extra cost, and your high speed allowance is the same either way.
If your phone still won't use 5G
Confirm 5G reaches your area on the coverage page and that your phone supports it. If both check out and you're still on LTE, contact Flex Mobile support.
